MediciGlobal / Meta-analysis

Clinical trial retention

A systematic review and meta-analysis examining the relationship between patient recruitment routes and retention across four clinical trials involving 2,849 participants.

Project approach

This systematic review investigated whether recruitment routes were associated with differences in trial retention. A search of MEDLINE, Cochrane and ERIC, together with a review of 38 internal projects, identified four trials with sufficient comparative follow-up data.

The meta-analysis pooled anonymised data on randomisation, visit attendance and early termination across three therapy areas. Study-specific and pooled relative risks, confidence intervals and between-study heterogeneity were examined. Retention trajectories tracked differences over successive visits, with later retention projected where follow-up was incomplete.

We interpreted the findings and developed the paper, including its forest plot and retention charts. The reporting distinguished the observed associations from causal effects and addressed the limitations of comparing non-randomised recruitment groups.

Clinical trial pre-screening

A meta-analysis comparing online eligibility screening alone with a two-step approach that adds a nurse telephone assessment before referral to a clinical trial site.

Project approach

A comparison of four clinical trials assessed what a nurse telephone assessment added to online eligibility screening. The analysis covered referral and screening outcomes, medical and non-medical reasons for disqualification, and the staff time involved in follow-up. We translated the findings into an article on recruitment efficiency and site workloads.

MediciGlobal / Statistical analysis

Clinical trial site performance

Statistical analysis exploring how recruitment data can help distinguish chance variation from site performance that warrants closer investigation.

Project approach

Binomial probability models helped distinguish chance variation from differences in site recruitment performance. Referral, screening and randomisation data were examined, alongside scenarios for redistributing referrals between sites. The analysis formed the basis of “Take a Chance”, which used probability charts and practical examples to explain the implications for recruitment and marketing spend.
